Patient Capital for Energy Access
Selco Energy Access Fund is a SEBI-registered Category I (Social Venture) Alternative Investment Fund managed by SELCO Solar Light Private Limited, the pioneering Bangalore-based rural energy enterprise founded in 1995 by Dr. Harish Hande. SELCO Solar Light has spent nearly three decades proving that sustainable energy solutions can be commercially viable for India's poorest households, installing over 450,000 solar systems across Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. The Selco Energy Access Fund is fundamentally different from conventional impact funds: its mandate is to provide patient capital to energy access entrepreneurs and enterprises in Tier 2–6 cities and rural India — founders who are typically overlooked by mainstream investors due to barriers of language, education, culture, or geography. The fund invests in early-stage and seed-stage enterprises providing sustainable energy services to underserved populations, prioritising social returns alongside financial sustainability. SELCO Foundation (the non-profit arm) provides ecosystem support, and the fund draws on SELCO's extensive grassroots network and 25+ years of field experience as a competitive advantage for deal sourcing and portfolio monitoring.
The fund operates on the conviction that the conventional impact investment narrative — 'doing good and making money' simultaneously — is often misapplied to deep social enterprises. Rather than maximising financial returns, the fund prioritises social returns first, devising financial structures that reflect the genuine cost of serving underserved communities. It seeks entrepreneurs who deliver energy services beyond Tier 1 cities, using non-traditional sourcing strategies such as peer referrals from former cohorts. Exits are designed to perpetuate social impact rather than maximise valuation; IPOs and PE buyouts are considered unlikely. The fund emphasises transparency, equal ethical standards between investor and investee, and field-experienced frontline staff for monitoring and evaluation.
